Students from THTI off to Canada

Four students at the Tobago Hotel and Tourism Institute (THTI) are expected to leave for Canada on Monday as they complete their final semester of the Associate Degree programmeme in Culinary Management.

The all -students are Doris Cornwall-Duke of Belle Garden; Khadija O’Connor from Bagatelle, Leisa Hamilton of Plymouth and Lyrene Dillon from Signal Hill.

The three months course of study at Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario forms part of the final year students programme but it afforded to those who have been able to maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or above. This is the third year of the programme since it started. In 2011, four students were sent abroad, ten in 2012 and four again this year.

An Articulation Agreement was signed between the hotel institute and the college in 2005 which facilitated the student exchange programme enabling students from both institutions to study at either places. It is a full scholarship programme that is paid for by the Canadian government.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the hotel school, Lyra Smith told the four students to have fun, build friendships, and be responsible but most of all still focus on their studies and keep the grades up. She said the college is one of Applied Arts and Technology with a student population in the vicinity of 3500.

Chairman of the Board of Directors, THTI, Dr. Verleen Bobb-Lewis challenged the students to go out and tell three persons where they will be going to free of charge for three months so that they may successfully recruit more students into the institution. She said to them that they must sell Tobago while they are in Canada because tourism is ever-expanding.

Hamilton indicated that she has travelled extensively so there was much excitement for her. Her goal is to construct and manage a restaurant.

The students will be accompanied by their chaperon, Mersha Speed. The hotel school held a send-off function for the four young ladies last Thursday evening.
