Tobago Woman Charged for $5.5 Million Fraud

According to Express writer Elizabeth Williams Gail Francis, of 126 Milford Road and Carnbee #1, Tobago, appeared in the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court yesterday, charged with attempting to defraud the Government of Trinidad and Tobago of $5.5 million.

Francis, 36, appeared before Magistrate Nannette Forde-John and was represented by her Attorney Martin George. She was not called upon to plead, as charges were laid indictably. 

The incident is reported to have occurred during the period March 21 to 22, in Port of Spain.Another man is being sought in relation to the matter, and is currently on the run from police in the United States.

The court heard that Francis, trading as Francis Rentals Ltd, allegedly received in an account at Republic Bank, Carrington Street, Tobago, the sum of $5,500,000, the property of the Government of T&T, which was transferred to that account by virtue of a forged instrument, a letter of instruction, from the Sport and Culture Fund, dated March 19, 2013. 

The matter was then adjourned and transferred to the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court.
