Baker's Scouting for Talent missed by Tobagonians

Mike Baker: Owner and Host
of Baker's Scouting
for talent
Tobagonians and visitors who once enjoyed their Wednesday nights at Baker’s Tobago Scouting Talent contest are now in a quandary as to how to spend their midweek.

Since the Michael Baker-led event last played in 2008, Tobago has lost one of its most popular entertainment events. The weekly event which played on at least 32 Wednesday nights of each year was last held in 2007 at the then popular Golden Star, Crown Point. Entertainers and talented individuals such as R&B singers, gospel artiste, dancers, pannists, calypsonians and unusual stage acts, had the opportunity to showcase their talents and win valuable prizes.

According to the affable Mike Baker, “I have been and still am being bombarded from a wide cross-section of individuals and organisations for me to restart the talent contest.”

Baker can be considered a Tobago icon due to his long standing work in the field of culture and for the years he served as Tobago’s premier lifeguard.

The three-time Tobago calypso monarch has had a distinguished career as one of Tobago’s leading recording artiste from the 1970s to now. Baker revealed his game plan in relation to a return of the popular talent contest.

He said, “although many people were even suggesting what venue I could use to stage the event, I believe the most appropriate venue to stage the talent contest will be at the Shaw Park Cultural Complex, so I am patiently waiting for the complex to open.”

The Baker’s Tobago Talent contest which offered a motorcar prize was a drawing card for foreign visitors, Trinidadians and Tobago residents.

So far, no other event has been able to replace the Wednesday night activity which had much audience participation, so many Tobago culture lovers and practitioners are hoping the loveable Michael Baker will be granted his wish when the cultural complex swings open its big doors to the public.
