Tobago police: Arrests imminent after drug busts

Arrests are imminent following two drug busts, amounting to $11.2 million, in Tobago yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police Heflin George told the Express.

At around 12:30 a.m., officers intercepted a black Nissan X-Trail at Northside Road, Moriah. When the vehicle came to a stop, the driver and another occupant escaped on foot through some nearby bushes.

A search of the vehicle revealed 11 crocus bags containing a quantity of packaged marijuana parcels. When weighed, it amounted to 200 kilos, with a street value of $6.2 million.

Then at around 1:15 a.m., officers attached to Roxborough Police Station were informed that a shipment of marijuana was being offloaded at Englishman’s Bay. Under the supervision of sergeants Stewart and Forbes, officers went to some bushes in Belle Garden where ten crocus bags containing 68 parcels, amounting to 166.36 kilos of compressed marijuana, were found.

The marijuana amounted to a street value of $5 million.

Senior Superintendent Garfield Moore said this was part of ongoing efforts to confiscate and prosecute persons who break the law.

“But we are not going to let up. We are going to continue the fight to ensure Tobago is not used as a transshipment point for drugs, either entering or leaving Tobago,” Moore said.

Assistant Commissioner George expressed relief his officers returned safe following the successful exercise.
