London To Lead Tobago Day in Trinidad on Sunday.

Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly and deputy political leader of the People’s National Movement Orville London will lead hundreds of Tobagonians to a special celebration in Port-of-Spain on Sunday. Called Tobago Day in Trinidad, the event, which is scheduled to take place at Balisier House courtyard, Port-of-Spain, begins at 10 am and ends at 6 pm.

PNM general secretary Ashton Ford said the day would feature Tobago cultural presentations and speeches by London and Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley. He said the event was expected to grow in participation because the January 21 date of the THA election has been announced.

Meanwhile, the T&T Guardian understands the PNM’s THA election campaign is not expected to begin until next month. The Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) launched its campaign in June and held its family day on the island on Tuesday. The PNM in Tobago has three public meetings scheduled for later this month.

The first takes place this evening in Moriah, the second in Plymouth on November 22 and the third in Roxborough on November 29. Several standing committees of the PNM will be appointed during the party’s General Council meeting, on Sunday. Ford said the remaining ten members of the General Council will also be appointed to complete the central executive.

London Says: PM Can't Trigger THA Election.

The Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is presumptuous in trying to force the hand of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) in calling  an early THA election, said Chief Secretary Orville London. He was responding to her (Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar) call last night made at a gathering at her private residence in Phillipine, South Trinidad. 

Orville London stated that only the THA has that power. He took a political jab at the Peoples Partnership saying that the Prime Minister and her Government was only good at diversionary tactics in an attempt to sway the citizenry away from pressing issues of the country, especially as it relates to Section 34 fiasco and the public outcry that resulted. He further noted "That neither the Prime Minister, Minister (Herbert) Volney, Minister (Jack) Warner or any other member of her Cabinet has in fact said anything to convince the public that there was not some sinister motive behind the decision to have the clause enacted."

London stressed the Prime Minister has not told the country why there seems to be in her Cabinet a clear distinction between what he called the "dispensables" and the "untouchables".

"Because you get that feeling that in the Cabinet the dispensables are the people you can throw to the public to give the impression that you are firm, that you are strong, that you have integrity. The untouchables will do the same thing or worse, and nothing happens," London said.

According to the THA Act 40 of 1996, the Tobago House of Assembly has no less than two months and no more than three months in which to call the election, but the Chief Secretary reminded the Prime Minister that the election cannot be triggered by her, nor is he hoping she will attempt to impose her will on the people of Tobago and the THA.

"I think the Prime Minister is a little presumptuous, quite honestly, to be telling us in the THA that we should call elections. The election will be called when the THA as an institution believes that we will set the date, and then the President will call the election after consultation," London Said.

CALL the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections now.

This was the challenge thrown out to Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday.

Last Thursday, Rowley, during a news conference at his Port of Spain office, said, "They (Government) do not deserve to be in office, they have betrayed the trust of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. They are stained and they are shamed, and they must leave office and we are calling for elections now," Rowley said.

Persad-Bissessar, addressing a gathering at her private residence in Phillipine, South Trinidad, said, "We challenge you (Rowley) call the THA elections now. That is the only one that is due and we will not sacrifice the votes and the trust and the mandate of the electorate of Trinidad and Tobago to do the thing that Mister Manning did twice, early elections."

Former prime minister Patrick Manning and former leader of the People's National Movement (PNM) called early general elections twice—once in 1995, which he lost to the United National Congress (UNC) and its then leader Basdeo Panday, and then in 2010, which he lost to the People's Partnership government led by Persad-Bissessar.

Persad-Bissessar said, "So Mister Rowley be a Tobago-born soldier, call the THA elections now. Dissolve the THA. Let us go forth. We are rising to the top with the TOP (Tobago Organisation of the People) because, for the first time in the history of this country, people of Tobago are given due respect side by side. Mister Rowley tell Mister (Orville) London to dissolve the THA and I will make the date for the election."

London is the THA's Chief Secretary. The election must take place by January 2013.

Yesterday, Persad-Bissessar hosted a pre-budget function at her home, where all ministers, Members of Parliament, regional corporations, non-governmental organisations and other groups were invited to attend.

The Prime Minister also told her guests she will continue to listen to the people and her government is "alive and strong".

She said, "I am fortified in my view that the Partnership is alive strong and we have demonstrated as a team that even if we should misstep or falter, that the collective good is greater than the individual good. There have been times when you have asked questions, as I have, and as ministers have and MPs ask. There have been questions that we have asked, and it is right and fitting that we ask those questions because when we ask those questions it makes us better."

Persad-Bissessar said, "The answers make us improve and do better than we did yesterday.

She said, "If any one of us falters and fails, I will have no compunction but to remove them out of the very government office because, at the end of the day, it is not about one of us, it is about all of us. I will always listen to the people, I will continue to listen and then lead. I will stay very strong and very focused. You gave us a mandate here and we will continue to carry out that mandate to serve the people."

She also announced that on Saturday there will be a rally at Mid Centre Mall in Chaguanas at 2 p.m. The purpose of the rally will be to discuss the upcoming budget.

$15 Million Pool For East Tobago

A $15 million public swimming pool is being constructed by the Tobago House of Assembly at Kendall in east Tobago.

Construction of the pool is being undertaken by the YMCA because of its experience gained in the construction of its pool at Courland in west Tobago, THA Chief Secretary Orville London stated at the sod turning of the new 25-metre pool on Thursday.

He disclosed that besides the swimming pool the facilities will include a learning to swim pool, seating, playroom and administrative offices.

London said there will be no discrimination in the use of the facilities that will be opened for all ages in nine months and urged residents of windward Tobago to make full use of them when they became operational. He added that too many facilities provided by the Assembly have been under utilised.

He said Tobago's first public swimming pool at Courland was built at a cost of $12 million of which the Assembly contributed 60 per cent of the cash, land and road infrastructure and was happy to see it was being fully utilized.

London says: Independence is more than Freedom

Chief Secretary of Tobago Orville London is calling on Tobagonians to appreciate the relative good fortune and quality of life we have enjoyed in comparison to many other developing countries of the region and the world. In his annual Independence Day message, London said the good fortune the country has experience has led to increased life expectancy for Tobagonians and a lower rate of poverty.

The Chief Secretary also boasted of the fact that Tobago has more health facilities, more recreational facilities, more community facilities and better apportioned educational facilities than any of its regional neighbours.

"However, as we celebrate, we must also be mindful of the mistakes made and repeated, of the opportunities created and lost, and of the pettiness and the prejudice nurtured and disseminated. So we must celebrate but, as we mark this anniversary of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, we must simultaneously be aware that it is the mindset, the posture, and the contribution of each individual which would have been the major factors determining our rate of development in our journey over the past 50 years," he noted.

And these selfsame qualities will continue to be the major factors in shaping our progress in ensuing decades.

Reflecting on the autonomy Tobago experienced under Great Britain, London said "Tobagonians owe it to our history, and to all those who would have been involved in the struggle, to remain steadfast in our quest for internal self-government. We must not be bribed or bullied into accepting anything less than what we deserve and what our predecessors envisaged for the island and its people."

Independence, he added, is more than freedom and involves how one utilises that freedom.

"Remember, independence means that the choices we make in the coming months and years will determine whether our children, and future generations will stand or sit, or even be forced to lie, in years to come. So I say to you, let us all as Tobagonians make those choices and take those actions that will label us as worthy of 50 years of Independence".

He highlighted a number of Tobagonians who have made the island and country proud, adding that Tobago's potential for significant contribution to the national economy must also remain a priority.

Keshorn Walcott Welcome Home:- Receives Trini Goodies

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar have Officially welcome home Keshorn Walcott, Gold Medalist in the Men's Javelin London 2012. A jubilant young man was all smiled as the massive crowd gathered at the Piarco Airport to welcome him. 

The Prime Minister presented him with a replica  plane of Caribbean Airlines and then announced that he would receive among other things:

1. Renaming of the Toco Light house to Keshorn Walcott light house

2. Twenty thousand (20000) sq ft of land in his hometown

3. 1 Million in cash

4. A House in Federation Park
5. An open scholarship to the University of Trinidad and Tobago

Olympic Monitor: Thompson 7th , Usian Bolt Runs New Olympic Record

In one of the most electrifying race of all time, the 100 meter Finals at the London Olympics did not fail to feature the 'Top Guns'. Lineing up were Usian Bolt, Tyson Gay, Asapa Powell, Justing Gatling, Yohan Blake, Ryan Bailey, Churandy Martina and our very own Richard Thompson. However, Bolt outraced his opponents, winning in an Olympic-record 9.63 seconds crushing his own 9.68 set back in 2008 Beijing Games. Yohan Blake’s cupped silver in  9.75, while the United States sprinter Justin Gatlin grabbed bronze in  9.79.

Trinidad and Tobago's silver medalist 2008 Richard Thompson could only place 7th with a 9.98 in front of an "injured" Asafa Powell of Jamaica clocking 11.99.

There could be no stopping the King of track, Bolt emphatically confirmed his status, ans set his name above all as the greatest sprinter in history as he retained his Olympic 100m title in peerless fashion.

Making history again he now holds the three fastest times in the 100 meters. Bolt in an interview stated "I was happy when I went out in the first round, I felt I could do this. I was slightly worried about my start. I didn't want to false start again so I sat in the blocks a little bit.
"It wasn't the best reaction in the world but I executed it and that was the key. My coach said 'stop worrying about the start because the best part of your race is the end'. It worked.
"I said it on the track, people can talk, but when it comes to championships it is all about business for me and I brought it. It was wonderful. I knew [the crowd] would be like this, I can feel that energy and I am extremely happy."

Its seems that there is no stopping this superman. For Trinidad and Tobago its back to the drawing board. We salute our athletes for their enormous efforts and we join in the celebration of our Caribbean brothers.

Olympic Monitor: 6th Place for Kelly Ann Baptiste

Although Kelly Ann produced the best ever Olympic performance by a woman athlete from Trinidad and Tobago, it was not enough to capture gold as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce wouldn't have it any other way than to ensure the Gold medal stays in Jamaica. 

A golden ribbon in her hair, the bubbly Jamaican made it back-to-back Olympic titles in the women's 100 meters Saturday night, closing ground over the last 20 meters and leaning at the line to win in 10.75 seconds and edge American Carmelita Jeter by .03 seconds.

Fraser-Pryce became the first woman to repeat in the 100 since Gail Devers of the U.S. in 1992 and 1996. 

Trinidad and Tobago's sprinter, Kelly Ann Baptiste stated that "everything happens for a reason," applauding Shelly Ann Fraser.  "It just shows what champions are made of. To be able to win successive Olympic titles, that's no easy feat. Hats off to her." said Baptiste. 

Running out of lane two, it was difficult for Baptiste to keep pace with the championship leaders. Stating that she could do better, Baptiste tried hard to contain her self, stating that 'I know I'm a better athlete". 

Semoy Hackett, another Trinidad and Tobago sprinter was unable to reproduce her personal best 11.04 seconds clocking from round one,finishing fifth in the opening semifinal heat in 11.26.

"The race wasn't properly distributed," she told the Sunday Express.

"At ten metres I felt I was too low. I felt I was going to fall, so I tried to get up and sprint to catch the pack. It was not as good as I wanted the race to be. I was satisfied with the 11.04 from (Friday), and I was trying to execute this race the same way, but unfortunately I didn't do it.

"I'm trying to make the final for the 200," Hackett continued, "hopefully medal, and then go on to the relay."

Michelle-Lee Ahye also bowed out in the semifinal round of the 100m dash, the 20-year-old T&T athlete finishing eighth in semifinal number three in 11.32 seconds.

"My first Olympics…I'm young. So I'm not really worried. Bigger and better things for Worlds."

Baptiste is also hoping for an improved performance at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

"I have a lot to prove to myself. The battle is within me and my abilities, and what I think I'm capable of. World Championships next year, that's my aim," Baptiste ended. "I'm just going to keep on working harder."

Olympic Monitor :- George Bovell Heads To 50 Metre Finals

George Richard Bovell 3rd has freestyled himself into the finals of the men's 50 metre freestyle. Swimming out of lane three bovell clocked a time of 21.77 to win his heat and advance to the semi finals. Bovell then swam the same to place 2nd and advances to the Finals. 

He is set to be in action just about 6 am local time, where he would be among the favorites to medal. However, he must fight off America's Cullen Jones and Brazil's Cesar Cielo the fastest qualifiers, if he must snatch the Gold tomorrow. The Eyes of Trinidad and Tobago would be on you George Bovell, make your country proud, 1.3 million people are back home supporting you.

THA Received 75 Million; Unawares.

It was last week that the Chief Secretary, Orville London called on the Minister of Finance, Larry Howai to release the $100 million fund that was approved to complete the new Scarborough General Hospital. 

A news release also indicated that London London as well as Finance and Enterprise Development Secretary Dr Anselm London and Secretary of Health and Social Services Claudia Groome-Duke made futile attempts to get the money released.

However, the Minister of Finance have indicated that a  $75 million payment was made on July 5, with the remaining $25 million to be paid  today.

When contacted yesterday, The Minister of Health remained critical of the THA's lack of knowledge of the payments, indicating that this is a cause for concern. He further stated, that London needs to go back and look at the THA books in light that the Minister of Finance have confirmed payments. 

Tobagojustice awaits a response from the Chief Secretary-Orville London in light of the new information brought to the public on this issue  of non payment. 

London Delivers Petition to PM

The message to the People's Partnership from Tobagonians is stop being "Dismissive" to their expressed sentiments on the issue of internal self government, according to chief Secretary of Tobago House of Assembly, Orville London. 

This message was conveyed to the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday after the Chief Secretary delivered a petition  to the PM's office for the Government to consider the THA's draft legislation on Constitutional reform and amendments to the THA Act. 

London indicated, at a press conference at the Hyatt Regency, that a number of 5,791 Tobagonians had affixed their signatures to the petition, and that the "people of Tobago are not attempting to force anything down the throats of the country, they are not saying that what they want should be the final thing. They are just saying these are our views and let us have a conversation."

Further, he indicated that a copy was also submitted to political scientist Dr Hamid Ghany, who is the appointee by the Prime Minister to head the Committee in ascertaining feeding back on the Green Paper on Tobago self Governance. 

Earlier this year (June 4) the PM accused London of trying to bully the Government into accepting two draft Bills on Tobago self-government, which she said was created without consulting the people of Tobago. London responded by stating that her statement was "erroneous, misleading and mischievous". Thus this move was done in an effort to preserve four years of effort by thousands of Tobagonians which was dumped or replaced with a document emanating from the Office of the Attorney General, The Green Paper.

NIB Office-Tobago Closed, THA to Help.

If you have noticed a huge pile of brown clay spreading out on the parking lot of the NIB mall, it might very well be linked to work being done on the sewer which have been malfunctioning.  The National Insurance Board's (NIB) office located at Scarborough has been closed for the past month.

A meeting was convened by Orville London, Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) in an effort to discuss the problems experienced at the office. 

During its closer, beneficiaries, many of which are elderly citizens have been seriously affected as they were unable to access services. 

Hilton Sandy, Deputy Chief Secretary and Secretary of Infrastructure indicated after the meeting, that remedial work to the sewer system at the mall will commence almost immediately. He further indicated that staff from his Division and the Waster and Sewerage Authority will be at work until the problem is fixed.

In the interim, the NIB has been relocated while general repairs are being undertaken.
