Jevaughn the ‘Perfect Student’ tops SEA in Tobago

Jevaugh Bruce
of North Regional SDA Primary School
THE top Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) pupil in Tobago is Jevaughn Bruce.

The 11-year-old, who attended the North Regional SDA School in Sandy River, Mason Hall, now moves on to Bishop’s High School. His parents are both teachers.

Bruce, who was all smiles at his school yesterday with his friends, ranks 178th among the top 200 pupils nationally.

According to statistics from the Division of Education in Tobago, there was an improvement in the total number of schools performing above the national average with 13 schools in 2014, compared with nine in 2013.

Bruce said he studied hard, prayed, and revised his formulas. He had this advice for other young persons: “They need to keep their eyes on God and keep striving for success.”

Bruce, a resident of Calder Hall, intends to be employed in the medical field or engineering. His mother Jenny Bruce is a teacher at Signal Hill Secondary, while his father is the principal at Des Vignes Road Primary School.

“I gave him the support he needed. I made sure he did his assignments and he had time for study and play. It was a balance. He was engaged in swimming, he also was engaged in playing the piano,” his mother said.

His father Vaughn Bruce told the Express his son was an A pupil from infants class, and he expected nothing but great things. He is also calling for more fathers to play an integral part in their children’s life.

“Well he studied, he played a lot,  we fell out now and then, but you know I know he sees the reward for his hard work, and I know he is savouring the moment,” he said.

While his Standard Five teacher said Bruce excelled in every subject, he was the pupil every teacher would like to have. “Jevaughn was the perfect student. I had no problem. He did his work. If he had something wrong and he needed to correct it I would tell him and he would go right back and correct it,” Ariane Ford-Roach said.

The second and third placed pupils—Sherice Antoine and Rhonichelle Roberts—came from Hope Anglican School.

Alarming Signal: No Tobago Student in SEA top 200

None of Tobago’s students were able to make it into the top 200 places at the national level in the 2013 Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) Examination results. This was revealed by Secretary in the Division of Education Youth Affairs and Sport (DEYAS) Councillor Gary Melville at an Appreciation Luncheon held for the top 20 SEA performers in Tobago. The function, which was attended by the students, their parents, teachers and principals, was held at the Mt. Irvine Bay Hotel last Tuesday. Melville in his brief address, pointed out that despite the fact there was no student from Tobago in the national top 200, parents should still be proud and show appreciation for the achievements of their children. “We need to show appreciation for our top performers as they have at this stage, demonstrated a pathway to success,” declared Melville. He then appealed to the students to continue to carry that same attitude of hard work into their new schools. “Parents must continue to encourage and provide the kind of environment and support for these children who could become our future leaders,” he added. Earlier in the function Assistant Education Coordinator Verlene Bobb-Lewis expressed high optimism on the incremental improvement of Tobago schools at the national level. She revealed that while only six schools had performed above the national average in 2012, this year the figure had risen to 11 schools. More and more schools are performing above the national average in Tobago,” she noted. “Also we have seen a drop in the under-30 marks performance from 14.9 to 9.2%,” reported Bobb-Lewis.
