Scholarship winner drowns in Mayaro

A University of the West Indies (UWI) student was found floating in a swimming pool at the bpTT Mayaro Resource Centre on Wednesday.
Jherome Alexander, 20, died at the Mayaro District Hospital.

Alexander, a national scholarship winner, was bathing with friends when he got into difficulty around 6.30p.m.

His aunt, Denise Alexander, said "He is a member of the Mayaro Past Pupils Association. That is a group of children from Mayaro who have done well, came together to help SEA pupils in preparing for Form One. They have classes at the Resource Centre in Mayaro everyday."

Alexander said her nephew went home after class and returned to the centre with friends. "I understand they were all swimming. The boys turned around and saw Jherome floating in the water. They pulled him out and he was frothing from the mouth. He was taken to the Mayaro District Hospital, where he died," she said.

The medical student lived with his mother, social welfare officer Cheryl Ann Wendy Alexander, at Peter Hill Extension, Mayaro. He was her only child.
