Scarborough Abattoir Cattle Slaughter Operations Temporarily Closed

The Division of Agriculture, Marine Affairs, Marketing and the Environment has temporarily suspended cattle slaughter operations at the Scarborough Abattoir.
This has become necessary, after it was discovered that the hoist system currently used to suspend the carcass of animals at the facility, is no longer sturdy due to structural failure. After assessing the situation, D.A.M.M.E engineers have asked that operations be suspended as a precautionary measure, to prevent injury to staff at the facility.
Therefore, the facility will remain closed for a period of 39 days; engineers have advised that work could be completed in a shorter time frame, however it is important that the repair works meet OSH standards, before operations can resume at the Scarborough Abattoir.
The Division of Agriculture, Marine Affairs, Marketing and the Environment's Marketing Department is at this time seeking an alternative location which can temporarily facilitate operations.
For further information please contact the Corporate Communications Unit of D.A.M.M.E. at 635-1612.
