Lovelace’s wife and mother of three, Marilyn Thomas was in shock yesterday over the murder in which the suspect is a 36-year-old man from Diego Martin who is assisting the Tobago police in their investigations. The kitchen knife used during the attack was later found by police on the ground of the rental apartment Lovelace shared with Thomas at Bacolet.
Thomas, who also has a son with the 36-year-old suspect, said the man entered the Bacolet apartment unannounced.
Speaking from a relative’s home in Signal Hill, Thomas, who was also injured during the attack, said, “He just came upon us unexpected, my door was opened. He just walked inside and take up a knife and just start to do what he had to do.”
A traumatised Thomas said her children were at a neighbour’s house at the time of the incident.
“It should not have happened, it did not make any sense you know. Curtis did not deserve that,” she said.
Landlord and owner of the apartment complex, Darwin Delancy, said Lovelace was a tenant at the apartment for the past four months. He described him as quiet, and stressed that he always paid his rent on time. “It was around 6.30 p.m. I got a call to come to the back apartment. When I got there, there were two cops, and the lady who lived at the apartment sitting outside, she was bleeding from stab wounds,” he said, referring to Thomas.
Delancy, who was employed at a hospital in New York City, USA for some time before returning home, said he remains in shock following the murder.
According to police reports, the incident occurred sometime before 6.30 p.m. on New Year’s Day when the suspect visited the Bacolet home of the couple asking to see his two-year-old son. An argument ensued between Thomas and the suspect, during which she was stabbed on her upper chest and side with a kitchen knife. She then ran into the bathroom area where Lovelace was and police said the suspect then broke down the door and began stabbing Lovelace about the body.
The stabbing ended in the bedroom area, where Lovelace slumped to the ground and died. During the melee, Thomas ran to neighbours for help. Neighbors pursued the suspect who evaded capture, but he was held by police in nearby bushes.
Thomas was taken to the Scarborough General Hospital, treated for her injuries and later discharged. The Scarborough Homicide Bureau and Scarborough CID officials are investigating the incident.
Contacted for comment yesterday, assistant Commissioner of Police Tobago, Brian Headly, said reports of threats need to be aggressively dealt with when they are made and reports of domestic disputes need to be looked at more intently to prevent re-occurrences.
THA Chief Secretary Orville London only last month expressed concerns over the crime situation in Tobago.
There were four murders in Tobago last year.
